What is the best time of year to hike the Cinque Terre?
You can start this self-guided walking tour on any day of the week. However, hiking in July and August is strongly not recommended because the Ligurian Coast becomes extremely hot and the trails get very crowded. The best months for a comfortable Cinque Terre walking holiday are typically the "shoulder seasons" of May, June, September, and October.
How difficult is the hiking on the Ligurian Coast?
This active itinerary is graded as moderate to challenging. You should be prepared for steep ascents and descents, lots of uneven stone steps, and rocky terrain. You will hike an average of 5 to 14 km (which takes between 2 to 7 hours) per day. Keep in mind that every hike starts and ends at sea level, meaning you will climb up and over the coastal ridges each day to reach the next town.
What happens if a Cinque Terre coastal trail is closed?
It is common for specific walkways to close temporarily due to coastal landslips or maintenance. Our detailed routing accounts for this. For example, because the famous lower path (the "Lovers Walk") frequently faces closures, our route guides you along a beautiful, higher, and more challenging path through the ancient vineyards of Volastra. Furthermore, from every single village of the Cinque Terre, it is always possible to take the local train to the next stop if a trail is closed or if you simply want to rest your legs.
Do I have to carry my own luggage between the villages?
No. One of the greatest benefits of this hiking vacation is that daily luggage transfers are included while you are on the tour. You only need to hike with a light daypack carrying your water, snacks, and camera, while your main bags are moved securely between your 3-star and 4-star hotels.
Which airport is best to fly into for the Cinque Terre?
The closest and most convenient international airports for this tour are Milan and Pisa. There are excellent, easy rail connections from both Pisa (in the south) and Milan or Genoa (in the north) directly to your starting town of Santa Margherita and departing town of Monterosso.
Are local train tickets and National Park fees included in the tour price?
Local train and bus tickets are not included; you should budget approximately €37 per person for transit during the week. Additionally, the entrance fee for the Cinque Terre Park trails (approx. €6 per person) and local hotel taxes (approx. €2-€4 per person, per night) are paid directly in cash on-site.
