Introduction

Ride Through Tuscany in Search of La Dolce Vita.

Imagine easing around the winding country roads of Tuscany on a classic Vespa, with vineyards, olive groves, cypress-lined lanes and golden hills unfolding around every bend. This is Tuscany at its most authentic—slow-paced, beautifully preserved and best experienced with the freedom to stop whenever something catches your eye.

Our 8-day self-guided Vespa holiday takes you deep into the heart of Tuscany, linking medieval hill towns, renowned wine regions and the UNESCO-listed landscapes of the Val d'Orcia. Ride a smooth, automatic 125cc Vespa equipped with a pre-programmed Garmin GPS, while your luggage is transferred between carefully selected 3- and 4-star boutique hotels, villas and historic agriturismos.

With 50-80 km of riding each day, there is plenty of time to pull over for an espresso, wander through medieval streets, sample local wines or linger over a long Tuscan lunch. This is not simply a sightseeing tour—it's an invitation to experience Tuscany at its own relaxed pace.

  • Iconic Tuscan Hill Towns: Discover the medieval towers of San Gimignano, the ancient Etruscan heritage of Volterra, the fortified village of Monteriggioni and the magnificent medieval heart of Siena.
  • The UNESCO Val d'Orcia: Ride through one of Italy's most celebrated landscapes, where rolling hills, cypress-lined roads and vineyards lead to Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano. Along the way, discover ancient thermal springs, Romanesque abbeys and timeless Tuscan villages.
  • The Chianti Wine Roads: Follow the legendary Chiantigiana through the heart of the Chianti countryside, stopping in celebrated wine villages including Radda, Panzano and Castellina, with the atmospheric Volpaia Castle among the highlights.
  • Wine, Cheese & Tuscan Flavours: Taste celebrated Brunello di Montalcino, local Pecorino cheese and regional specialities, with opportunities to discover Tuscany's renowned wines and traditional cuisine along the way.
  • A Taste of Tuscan Cooking: Roll up your sleeves for an authentic hands-on cooking class at a beautiful Tuscan villa, learning to prepare traditional regional dishes before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your work.
  • The Freedom of the Vespa: Travel at your own pace on quiet country roads, stopping at village cafés, scenic viewpoints, vineyards and hidden corners that are easy to miss when travelling by car or coach.

Ride the Vespa. Taste the wine. Follow the road. Live La Dolce Vita.

Frequently Asked Questions

What driver's license do I need to rent a Vespa in Italy?

To legally rent and drive a 125cc Vespa in Italy, drivers must be over 21 years old, hold a valid driver's license for a passenger car, and possess an International Driving Permit (IDP) . The IDP must be obtained in your home country prior to traveling to Italy.

Do I need prior experience to ride a Vespa on this tour?

Yes, prior experience operating a motorized scooter or motorcycle is strictly mandatory. Italian country roads feature twisting curves, hills, and traffic. Tour operators cannot provide riding lessons on site, so all drivers must arrive already capable of confidently controlling a 125cc automatic scooter.

How do luggage transfers work on a Vespa tour?

You do not need to carry heavy luggage on your scooter. Your main suitcases are picked up from your hotel every morning and transferred directly to your next villa accommodation by our support vehicle. You ride with only a small daypack or essentials stored in the Vespa side bag or under-seat compartment.

What is the difference between Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile, and Chianti Classico?

On Days 4, 5, and 7, you will ride through three of Italy's legendary wine regions:

  • Brunello di Montalcino: Produced in Val d'Orcia from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes, aged for a minimum of 2 years in oak.
  • Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Crafted on the hills around Montepulciano primarily from Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) grapes.
  • Chianti Classico: Produced along the Chiantigiana road between Siena and Florence, identified by the famous "Black Rooster" (Galletto Nero) seal.

What is the Palio di Siena seen on Day 3 and Day 6?

Siena's famous Palio is a historic bareback horse race held twice every summer (July 2 and August 16) in the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Riders represent Siena's distinct medieval city districts (contrade), wearing traditional Renaissance costumes in a fierce, centuries-old tradition.

What are the "Crete Senesi" ridden on Day 6?

The Crete Senesi (Sienese clays) is an extraordinary landscape south of Siena characterized by grey, undulating clay hills, eroded gullies (calanchi), and solitary cypress trees surrounding historic hilltop hamlets like Asciano and Trequanda.

What makes Pienza unique in Renaissance architecture?

Pienza was redesigned in the 15th century by Pope Pius II as the "ideal Renaissance town." Built according to humanist architectural principles, it features a grand Duomo and Palazzo Piccolomini overlooking the sweeping Val d'Orcia. Pienza is also famous throughout Italy for its artisanal pecorino (sheep's milk) cheese.

What is the significance of the thermal square in Bagno Vignoni?

When you ride into Bagno Vignoni on Day 4, you will encounter one of the most unique squares in Italy. Instead of a traditional paved piazza, the center of this tiny medieval village is a massive, 14th-century rectangular pool filled with steaming, gently boiling thermal water. Known since Roman times, these therapeutic hot springs were historically visited by pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena, as well as illustrious figures like Lorenzo the Magnificent and Saint Catherine of Siena.

What makes Sant'Antimo Abbey an important stop?

Reached on Day 4, the Abbey of Sant'Antimo is a magnificent Romanesque church set against a peaceful backdrop of rolling hills, cypresses, and vineyards. Legend has it that the original abbey was founded by the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne in the 8th century as an expression of gratitude after his army was saved from a plague. Beyond its stunning travertine architecture, the abbey is deeply tied to the liturgical tradition of Benedictine monks and is famous for its hauntingly beautiful Gregorian chants.

Do I need to manually shift gears on the rented Vespa?

No. The Vespa LX 125cc provided for this tour features a fully automatic transmission and an electric start. This modern convenience allows you to focus entirely on the sweeping Tuscan views, navigating the twists and turns of the road without the hassle of a manual clutch. However, as noted in the safety requirements, you must still have prior experience driving a scooter or motorbike to safely handle the vehicle on public roads.
