Introduction

Ride a Vespa Between Two Seas in Southern Italy.

Experience the sun-soaked landscapes, coastal roads and timeless villages of Puglia from the seat of a classic Vespa. This self-guided Vespa holiday explores the Salento peninsula—the distinctive heel of Italy's boot—where the turquoise Ionian Sea meets the deep blue Adriatic and every road seems to lead to another whitewashed village, ancient olive grove or seaside terrace.

With 50-90 km of riding per day, you'll travel along quiet country lanes, winding coastal roads and historic village streets, passing dry-stone walls, centuries-old olive trees and dramatic limestone cliffs. Your luggage is transferred between stays, allowing you to travel light and enjoy the freedom of exploring Salento at your own pace.

Along the way, you'll combine the pleasure of Vespa riding with some of the region's most memorable food, wine, cultural and coastal experiences.

  • Two Seas, One Peninsula: Ride between the Ionian and Adriatic coasts, stopping at sandy beaches, secluded coves and spectacular cliffside viewpoints along the way.
  • Lecce & Baroque Puglia: Discover Lecce, the Baroque jewel of Salento, with its ornate churches, richly decorated palazzi and warm golden limestone architecture. Enjoy a local wine tasting and experience the flavours of the region.
  • Taste Authentic Salento: Visit a local dairy to discover how traditional Apulian cheeses are made and enjoy a tasting of freshly prepared specialities. Later, take part in a hands-on pasta-making class, followed by a traditional dinner in Vignacastrisi.
  • Santa Maria di Leuca: Ride to the southernmost tip of the Salento peninsula, known as the "end of the earth" , where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet. From here, take a boat excursion along the coast to discover its spectacular sea caves.
  • Ancient Villages & Sacred Art: Explore the frescoes of Galatina, discover the mysterious megaliths of the Megalithic Garden of Giurdignano, and uncover centuries of history hidden in Salento's villages.
  • Wild Coastal Landscapes: Visit the WWF Oasis of Le Cesine, one of Salento's most important coastal wetlands, where dunes, pine forests, marshes and Mediterranean vegetation provide a haven for wildlife.

The Freedom of the Open Road

There's something uniquely Italian about exploring Puglia by Vespa. The pace is relaxed, the roads invite you to wander, and there is always another village piazza, seaside café or hidden cove around the corner.

From Lecce's Baroque streets to the meeting point of two seas at Santa Maria di Leuca, this is Salento experienced the way it should be—with the wind in your face, good food on the table and the freedom to stop whenever you see something worth discovering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What driver's license do I need to ride a Vespa in Puglia?

To ride a 125cc Vespa in Italy, drivers holding a European Union driver's license generally only require a standard Category B car license. Drivers holding licenses from non-EU countries (such as the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK) must present a valid national driver's license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) . Prior experience driving a scooter or motorcycle is required for safety.

How does luggage transport work on a self-guided Vespa tour?

You do not need to carry your heavy luggage on the scooter! Each morning, simply leave your main bags at the hotel reception. Our dedicated transfer service collects your luggage and transports it directly to your next accommodation while you ride light with just your small daypack stored in the Vespa top box or under-seat compartment.

What is the difference between the Ionian and Adriatic coasts of Salento?

This itinerary allows you to experience both coastlines:

  • The Ionian Coast (West): Characterized by long stretches of fine sandy beaches, shallow turquoise waters, coastal pine forests, and dramatic direct sea sunsets (e.g., Porto Cesareo, Gallipoli).
  • The Adriatic Coast (East): Known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, deep blue sea caves, sea stacks, and panoramic coastal roads hugging the cliffs (e.g., Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca).

Is Vespa rental included in the base package?

The base package includes all hotel accommodations, breakfasts, luggage transfers, navigation apps, and special tastings/activities. The Vespa rental itself (along with helmet hire and Kasko insurance coverage) is added as a dedicated rental package based on your preferred model and single/double rider preference.

What is the Megalithic Garden of Salento near Giurdignano?

Encountered on Day 6, Giurdignano is known as the "Megalithic Capital of Italy." The countryside surrounding the village features the highest density of prehistoric stone monuments in the region, including over 25 dolmens (megalithic tombs) and 15 menhirs (standing stones) dating back to the Bronze Age.

Why is the floor mosaic inside Otranto Cathedral so famous?

Visited on Days 6 and 7, the Cathedral of Annunciation in Otranto houses a colossal 12th-century floor mosaic executed by a monk named Pantaleone. Known as the "Tree of Life," it spans the entire length of the nave and depicts a complex medieval worldview blending Biblical stories (Noah's Ark, Alexander the Great, King Arthur) with signs of the zodiac and mythological beasts.

What is the WWF Natural Oasis Le Cesine?

Ridden through on Day 7, Le Cesine is a protected coastal wetland reserve managed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) . Representing one of the last surviving wetland environments along the southern Adriatic coast, it features Aleppo pine forests, freshwater marshes, Mediterranean scrub, and serves as a vital sanctuary for migratory water birds.

What is the historical significance of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate?

Encountered on Day 2 of your Vespa tour, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate is one of the most important monastic centers of the Byzantine rite in southern Italy. Dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, the monastery was later transformed into a working agricultural farm. Since 2012, this beautifully preserved historical site has been entrusted to the Italian Environment Fund (FAI) , offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region's agricultural and monastic past.

What are the main architectural highlights in Nardò?

When you park your Vespa in Nardò on Day 4, head straight for Piazza Salandra, the breathtaking Baroque heart of the old town. In the center of the square stands the ornate spire of the Immaculate Conception. The piazza is also surrounded by precious historic buildings, including the Sedile (featuring the statue of St. Gregorio Armeno), the historic Universitas building, and the iconic Caccialuppi clock.

Where can I see the traditional "Taranta" dance in Puglia?

On Day 4, your itinerary takes you to the town of Galatina. This town is culturally famous as a place where time is marked by the beat of tambourines, and where art and faith traditionally meet the frantic, historic folk dance known as the taranta (or pizzica). While in Galatina, it is also highly recommended to visit the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria to view some of the most beautiful frescoes in Italy.

Who built the Castle of Copertino?

Visited on Day 3 as you ride toward the Ionian coast, the massive Castle of Copertino was built by the renowned military architect Evangelista on behalf of the Marquis Alfonso Castriota. As you wander the alleys surrounding the fortress, you can spot palaces and churches that reflect the diverse dominations that have ruled the area over the centuries, including Greek, Swabian, and Norman influences.

What botanical wonders can be found at La Cutura?

Located near Vignacastrisi and visited on Day 6, La Cutura is an incredibly important and expansive botanical garden. Spanning across a historic rural estate, it features eleven wonderful themed gardens and houses a staggering collection of more than 3,000 different species of succulents and tropical plants.

What makes the medieval village of Acaya unique?

On your final riding day (Day 7) before returning to Lecce, you will ride through Acaya. It is a rare example of a perfectly preserved 16th-century fortified town. The village is completely enclosed by rectangular defensive walls and features a central castle built in 1535 by Gian Giacomo d'Acaya. The fortress is entirely surrounded by a deep moat, accessible only by a single bridge, enveloping every corner of the village in a rich medieval atmosphere.
