Day 1
Welcome On Board & Industrial Windmills
Arrive in Amsterdam for embarkation and check-in at 2:00 p.m., where the crew welcomes you aboard your boutique floating hotel. Around 3:00 p.m., the barge sets sail toward Zaandam. Once docked, hop on your bicycle for an introductory warm-up ride led by your tour leader to the famous Zaanse Schans open-air museum. Marvel at the historic collection of working industrial windmills, traditional green wooden houses, and artisan cheese and clog factories before returning to the ship for dinner.
Day 2
Polders, Whaling History & Schermerhorn Windmills
Set off from Zaanse Schans into the historic "Land of Leeghwater," a vast green polder area reclaimed from the sea in the 17th century. Cycle along quiet dikes to the picture-perfect village of De Rijp, once a prosperous whaling port surrounded by water. Pass the impressive windmills of Schermerhorn before arriving in Alkmaar, world-renowned for its historic city center, ancient canals, and centuries-old cheese market tradition.
Day 3
Artists' Villages, Coastal Dunes & The Wadden Sea
Depart Alkmaar through the picturesque artist village of Bergen, heading directly toward the North Sea coast. Ride through the pristine North Holland Dune Reserve, a 5,300-hectare protected forest and dune sanctuary. Rejoin the ship at the naval port of Den Helder. Weather permitting, enjoy an exhilarating afternoon sail across the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea to Texel Island, the largest of the Dutch Wadden islands.
Day 4
Island Dunes, Seal Sanctuaries & The IJsselmeer
Spend the day discovering Texel Island, a true paradise for cyclists. Cycle through tranquil nature reserves, charming sheep-farming hamlets, and wide sandy beaches. You can stop at Ecomare, the famous seal sanctuary and nature museum, or enjoy a coffee at a beachfront cafe. In the late afternoon, reboard the ship (or take the ferry) to sail across the Wadden Sea toward the mainland, mooring overnight in the historic IJsselmeer port of Medemblik.
Day 5
IJsselmeer Sea Dikes & The Zuiderzee Heritage
Cycle along the massive sea dike bordering IJsselmeer Lake—once part of the wild North Sea before the construction of the Afsluitdijk dam. Enjoy wide-open water views on one side and lush green polder farmland on the other. Arrive in Enkhuizen, a gorgeous Golden Age fishing port. Spend the afternoon wandering its historic harbor or visiting the famous Zuiderzeemuseum. Tonight, dinner is unincluded, giving you the freedom to dine at a local harbor restaurant of your choice.
Day 6
Maritime Wealth of the Dutch East India Company
Enjoy a relaxed, shorter cycling stage today following the curved coastline of the IJsselmeer. Your destination is Hoorn, one of the most powerful and wealthy harbors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the 17th century. Arrive early in the afternoon to admire the grand merchant mansions, historic warehouses, and the 16th-century Hoofdtoren harbor tower.
Day 7
Fishing Villages, Waterland & Return to the Capital
Wake up as the ship sails to the famous fishing village of Volendam. Saddle up for your final cycling leg through the enchanting Waterland region, a landscape dotted with hundreds of small lakes, peat bogs, and winding canals. Pass through traditional wooden fishing hamlets before riding back into Amsterdam. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring the UNESCO-listed canal ring, visiting world-class museums, or doing some last-minute shopping.
Day 8

Enjoy a final lavish Dutch breakfast buffet on board your boutique ship. Disembarkation and check-out take place by 9:30 a.m., leaving you with unforgettable memories of Holland's coastal landscapes and seascapes.

What makes a boutique ship tour different from larger river cruises?
Our boutique barge hosts a maximum of 24 guests, creating a cozy, relaxed, and personalized atmosphere. Unlike large 100+ passenger ships, a boutique vessel allows you to build genuine connections with your tour leader, captain, and fellow travelers, while enjoying custom-prepared meals featuring fresh, local Dutch ingredients.
What happens if bad weather prevents the ship from sailing to Texel Island?
The Wadden Sea crossing depends on wind and tide conditions. If weather prevents the barge from sailing across on Day 3, the ship will dock safely in Den Helder, and guests will take the quick, scenic 20-minute passenger/passenger bike ferry across to Texel Island on Day 4 to complete the island cycle route without missing any highlights.
Is this North Holland tour suitable for beginner cyclists?
Yes! This tour is rated Level 1 (Easy). The terrain is overwhelmingly flat, consisting of smooth polders, coastal dikes, and dedicated, car-free Dutch cycle paths. Daily rides offer short and long options (ranging from 8 km to 53 km), making it ideal for leisure cyclists and beginners.
Why is one dinner not included on Day 5 in Enkhuizen?
On Day 5, the ship docks in the heart of historic Enkhuizen. We leave dinner unincluded so guests can step ashore and experience the authentic culinary culture of a historic Dutch fishing port at a local restaurant or seafood tavern of their choice. Your tour leader will provide curated restaurant recommendations on board.
Can I ride independently instead of riding with the guided group?
Yes. While a professional tour leader accompanies the group on every daily cycle ride to share local history and culture, you are always welcome to cycle independently at your own pace using the provided Ride with GPS app tracks and detailed onboard route maps.
What cycling gear is provided with rental bikes on this tour?
All rental bikes (both standard 7-speed touring bikes and e-bikes) come equipped with a lightweight aluminum frame, comfortable gel seat, responsive handbrakes, anti-puncture tires, a frame lock, a waterproof pannier bag, and a biodegradable water bottle.
What is a Dutch "polder" landscape, and will I see them on this tour?
A polder is low-lying land reclaimed from water (lakes or the sea) using dikes, canals, and windmills. On this North Holland tour, you will cycle extensively through historical polder areas, most notably the 17th-century "Land of Leeghwater," where you can observe how centuries of Dutch engineering turned submerged land into lush, green pastures protected by sea walls and drainage windmills.
Can I see traditional cheese-making and clog-carving on this bike cruise?
Yes! On Day 1, your cycling route brings you to the Zaanse Schans open-air museum, where master craftspeople demonstrate traditional wooden clog carving and authentic Dutch cheese production. Additionally, on Day 2, you will visit Alkmaar, the historic home of Holland’s most famous traditional cheese market.
What wildlife and nature can I expect to see in the North Holland Dune Reserve?
On Day 3, you will ride through the North Holland Dune Reserve, a massive 5,300-hectare coastal sanctuary. This protected area features pine forests, sweeping sand dunes, diverse wild bird species, and unique dune flora, offering some of the most dramatic coastal nature in the Netherlands.
How do packed lunches work during daily cycling excursions?
Each morning during the generous breakfast buffet on board your boutique barge, you will prepare your own fresh, custom packed lunch for the trail. Your tour package includes a complimentary waterproof pannier bag and a biodegradable water bottle, making it easy to carry your sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and drinks comfortably on your bike.
What makes the historic ports of Hoorn and Enkhuizen significant?
Both Hoorn and Enkhuizen were prominent harbor cities during the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age and served as key bases for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Today, cycling through these towns allows you to admire grand merchant mansions, ancient sea towers, historic wooden ship harbors, and cultural landmarks like the outdoor Zuiderzeemuseum.
Is Wi-Fi available on board the boutique barge?
Yes, Wi-Fi access is available in the main dining restaurant and lounge area of the ship. It allows you to check email, upload daily photos, and stay connected while relaxing after a rewarding day of cycling along the Dutch coast.
