Immerse Yourself in Europe’s Ancient Trade Routes.
Step back into the Middle Ages on the Hansa Highlights tour, a spectacular 8-day bike and barge holiday that guides you through one of the most culturally rich and beloved cycling regions in the Netherlands. You will travel in comfort aboard your floating hotel, sailing and cycling along the legendary rivers that shaped Dutch history.
On this Level 1 semi-guided cycling cruise, you will trace the ancient trade routes of the Rhine and the beautiful IJssel River. During the Middle Ages, these waterways formed the backbone of the Hanseatic League—a powerful confederation of merchant guilds that brought immense wealth to the region. Today, that history is beautifully preserved in the towering city gates, cobblestone streets, and grand religious architecture of the towns you will visit. Enjoy the freedom of pedaling at your own pace through diverse, fairy-tale landscapes:

Day 1
Welcome Aboard & The Historic Rhine River
Your journey begins in the vibrant capital of Amsterdam. The crew warmly welcomes you on board between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Settle into your cabin before the ship sets sail at approximately 2:00 p.m. You will cruise down the impressive Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, taking in the passing Dutch countryside, until you reach the historic riverside town of Wijk bij Duurstede, where you will spend your first night on board.
🌟 Daily Highlight: Relaxing on the sun deck as your floating hotel cruises out of Amsterdam toward the historic Rhine River.
Day 2
The Lower Rhine & Airborne History
While you enjoy a hearty breakfast, the ship sails to Wageningen. From here, your first cycling stage begins. Pedal through the lush, green valley of the Lower Rhine, characterized by quiet dikes and sweeping river views. Your destination is Arnhem, a former Hanseatic city renowned for its World War II history. Spend the afternoon strolling the shopping streets, relaxing on a terrace, or visiting the museums dedicated to Operation Market Garden—the historic 1944 airborne battle for the Rhine bridge.
🌟 Daily Highlight: Cycling the beautiful Lower Rhine Valley before stepping into the profound WWII history of Arnhem.
Day 3
Ferry Rides & 14th-Century Streets
Enjoy breakfast as the ship cruises to the charming Hanseatic town of Doesburg. Take a short morning walk through its historic streets before hopping on your bike. Ride along the IJssel River to Bronkhorst, which proudly holds the title of the smallest town in the Netherlands. From here, choose a shorter route via a local river ferry, or a longer route tracing the eastern riverbank. Both paths lead through beautiful countryside to Zutphen, and finally to Deventer. In the evening, join your tour leader for an included walking tour of Deventer—and don't forget to taste their famous local gingerbread!
🌟 Daily Highlight: Exploring Bronkhorst's tiny, picturesque streets and joining an evening walking tour of historic Deventer.
Day 4
Woodlands & The Grand Medieval Gates
The ship sails to Wijhe as you eat breakfast. Saddle up for a scenic morning ride to Hattem, a town boasting a rich, highly visible medieval history. You can choose a shorter route hugging the riverbanks, or opt for a longer ride across the eastern edge of the sprawling Veluwe nature reserve. Pass through the stunning Hanseatic city of Zwolle before continuing on to Kampen. As the largest Hanseatic city in the Netherlands, Kampen features a magnificent skyline of historic merchant gates and towers, perfect for an after-dinner stroll.
🌟 Daily Highlight: Marveling at the incredibly preserved medieval merchant architecture and towering city gates of Kampen.
Day 5
Border Lakes, Moorlands & Ancient Fish Markets
Leave Kampen behind as you cycle along the sparkling Bordering Lakes (Randmeren) to the charming fishing harbor of Elburg, a popular summer spot for swimming and boating. From Elburg, your route dives into the deep woods and open moorlands of the Veluwe region. The contrasting landscape eventually gives way to Harderwijk, your destination for the night. In the 1500s, Harderwijk boasted the largest fish market in the entire Zuiderzee region, and its old fishing harbor remains a delight to explore.
🌟 Daily Highlight: The striking contrast of riding from the deep woodland trails of the Veluwe straight to the breezy coastal harbor of Harderwijk.
Day 6
Traditional Costumes & Coastal Trails
Today offers two beautiful cycling options: a shorter, breezy ride hugging the coast of the Bordering Lakes, or a longer route that weaves through the adjacent coastal woodlands. In the afternoon, you will pedal into Spakenburg, a historic fishing village famous for the traditional Dutch costumes still worn by some of its older residents today. Conclude your ride by meeting the ship in the harbor town of Huizen.
🌟 Daily Highlight: Experiencing living history in Spakenburg, where traditional Dutch maritime culture and attire are still preserved.
Day 7
Star Fortresses, Waterfront Castles & The Capital
Your final day of cycling starts in Huizen and leads you to two of the most impressive historical sites in the region. First, ride into Naarden, one of the best-preserved star-fortresses in Europe. Continue to Muiden, famous for the spectacular Muiderslot—a 14th-century waterfront castle. From Muiden, enjoy a peaceful ride along quiet roads back into the bustling heart of Amsterdam. You have the entire afternoon and evening to take a canal tour, visit the Anne Frank House, or celebrate the end of your journey in a cozy local pub.
🌟 Daily Highlight: Standing before the towering brick walls and moats of Muiderslot Castle before making your triumphant return to Amsterdam.

What is the Hanseatic League, and why are these cities special?
The Hanseatic League was a powerful commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns that dominated trade in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. Cities along the IJssel River (like Kampen, Deventer, and Zutphen) grew incredibly wealthy during this time. Today, cycling through these towns allows you to step back in time and marvel at their exceptionally preserved 14th-century merchant mansions, grand weighing houses, and towering city gates.
How does a "semi-guided" bike tour work?
On a semi-guided tour, you have the ultimate freedom to ride independently at your own pace. Every evening, the onboard tour leader briefs you on the next day's routes. In the morning, you navigate yourself using our highly accurate Ride With GPS smartphone app and printed maps. The tour leader also cycles the route that day, meaning they are always nearby and reachable by a quick phone call in case you need assistance, directions, or have an emergency.
Is the cycling route flat on this tour?
Yes, the Hansa Highlights tour is rated Level 1 (Easy). The 125-kilometer IJssel valley and the surrounding Bordering Lakes feature impeccably flat, well-maintained, and mostly car-free cycle paths. It is the perfect terrain for a leisurely, relaxing cycling holiday, making it ideal for international travelers who want to see Europe by bike without tackling strenuous hills.
Can I choose how far I ride each day?
Absolutely. On almost every day of the itinerary (Days 3, 4, 5, and 6), you are given the choice between a shorter route or a longer route. If you ever feel like taking a complete rest day, you can simply leave your bike parked and stay on board the barge as it cruises to the next historic harbor.
What are the "Bordering Lakes" (Randmeren)?
The Bordering Lakes are a unique chain of lakes created during the massive 20th-century Dutch land reclamation projects. They act as a watery divide between the "old" historic mainland of the Netherlands (featuring ancient fishing villages like Harderwijk and Spakenburg) and the "new" province of Flevoland, which was entirely reclaimed from the bottom of the sea.
Do I need to pack my own lunches for the bike rides?
No need to find a supermarket! Every morning during breakfast on the ship, a buffet of fresh breads, meats, cheeses, and fruits is provided so you can prepare your own custom packed lunch for your ride. We also provide a complimentary waterproof pannier bag to easily carry your lunch, camera, and snacks on your bike.
Is my luggage transported for me during the tour?
Yes. Because you are traveling on a premium bike and barge cruise, you only have to unpack your suitcase once. Your luggage stays safely in your cabin while you cycle during the day, and your floating hotel meets you at your destination harbor every afternoon.
What happens if it rains while cycling in the Netherlands?
We bike! Most participants simply put on their rain gear and enjoy the beautiful Dutch countryside, so packing a good, breathable rain jacket is highly recommended. If the weather becomes so severe that cycling is truly impossible, you are always welcome to stay comfortable on board your floating hotel. Alternatively, your tour leader may help arrange alternative cultural excursions or city tours for the day.
How many hours a day will I actually spend on the bike?
While the daily cycling stages average about 50 kilometers (32 miles), the time spent actively pedaling on your bicycle is only about 4 hours per day. Because the Dutch river valleys are exceptionally flat, these stages are taken at a very leisurely pace. A typical cycling day spans seven to eight hours total, leaving you plenty of time for leisurely breaks, enjoying your packed lunch, and exploring the towering gates of these medieval merchant cities.
Do I need to pack a hair dryer or special power adapters?
You do not need to pack a hair dryer, as they are readily available on all of our barges. In fact, it is highly recommended that travelers from North America or Australasia do not bring their own hair dryers. Due to voltage differences, foreign hair dryers can easily short circuit the ship's electrical system, even when plugged into a standard travel adapter.
What is the typical demographic and language spoken on board?
To ensure a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, the common language spoken on board our international barges is English. You will be sharing your historic castle and river cruise with like-minded travelers primarily from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The average age of our cycling guests typically ranges from 50 to 80, though younger and older participants with basic cycling skills are always warmly welcomed.
Will I have Wi-Fi on the barge to stay in touch with family back home?
Yes, free Wi-Fi is available on board, though it is generally limited to the communal lounge and upper deck areas. Because the barge is a moving vessel navigating rural waterways, you should not expect a perfect, high-speed internet connection for the entire trip. During peak evening hours when many guests log on to share their daily photos, connection speeds can slow down.
Can I bring my own customized bicycle or my own bike seat?
While you are welcome to bring your own standard bicycle or e-bike (provided you pay the weekly parking fee and reserve space in advance), custom-made bicycles, tricycles, and recumbent bikes cannot be accommodated on board due to strict space limitations. If you want to ride in personalized comfort without the hassle of flying with heavy gear, you can actually bring your own bicycle seat from home! Our premium rental bikes are stable, upright unisex models, and most standard personal seats will fit directly onto our rental posts.
